7 Scientifically-Proven Ways to Ease Period Cramps

7 SCIENTIFICALLY-PROVEN WAYS TO EASE PERIOD CRAMPS

By: FemmyCycle

We’ve all been there. Times when you are going about your life, and a sudden pain appears in your abdominal region. Cramps. Often arriving without warning, they can come in hot and make their presence known.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to make cramps a thing of the past. Here are our top seven (scientifically proven) tips for reducing period cramps:

Eat a Healthy, Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Menstrual pain and inflammation in the body often go hand in hand. The great news is that simple changes to your diet can drastically reduce the pain you feel during your menstrual cycle. During your period cramps, be sure to fuel your body with plenty of vegetables (especially greens), fruits, and healthy fats such as fish, eggs, and nuts. Try your best to limit processed foods, heavy sweets, and alcohol during this time, as these particular foods take much longer to process and require your body to do more work. Not only can small tweaks in your diet help with cramps - your energy and digestion levels will thank you too!

Drink Water

Water. Water. Water. When it comes to your period cramps, hydration is key (well, also for survival, but we’ll stay on one topic for now). Your body is going through a lot of changes during your monthly flow. Even the slightest dip in hydration levels can affect our moods and increase fatigue - further adding to the symptoms you experience during menstruation. Drink up to keep your hydration and mood levels balanced for a better flow.

Break a Sweat

Keeping the body active is a great way to keep your cramps at bay, whether that’s going for a walk, taking a dance class, doing yoga, or any other form of movement you may love (orgasms fall into this category too!). Exercise releases endorphins and other hormones that relieve pain and make you feel good; consider these benefits as you incorporate them during your period cramps.

Sip Herbal Teas

A cup of warm tea is comforting and can also soothe your belly during menstruation. Ginger and mint teas have been proven to help with an upset stomach which is often accompanied by cramps. Chamomile and raspberry teas promote healthy menstruation and aid with cramping and relaxation. Put a few brews on rotation!

Chill Out

High stress levels can lead to more intense menstrual symptoms like mood swings, bloating and cramps. So we say slow down, close your eyes. Breathe. Incorporating a self-care practice during this time not only feels good, but your body will thank you.

Use Heat Therapy

Using a heating pad, hot compress, or taking a warm bath can help to relax the muscles in your lower abdomen, back, and pelvic area. These muscles tend to tense up during your cycle. Get comfortable and let the heat do the work.

Advocate For Yourself

If you still find your cramps unbearable, there are a myriad of pain relief options that can help. These include over-the-counter anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen, combination medications specifically for period symptoms, and even more natural choices such as acupuncture and herbs.

If you have consistently painful periods, you may consider seeing a doctor who can test for underlying conditions. They can guide you with personalized treatment options that work best for your body.

With these tips, we know you can dominate your period. What tips would you add to this list? Be sure to let us know on our social media channels![/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

FemmyCycle Completes Strategic Rebrand and Unveils New Packaging, Website, and Cup Cleanser

By: Press Release

San Diego, CA February 1, 2021 - Excellus Holdings, the parent company of the innovative, next generation menstrual cup FemmyCycle, is pleased to announce the completion of a strategic rebranding effort. The FemmyCycle rebrand includes a new logo, website, packaging, and brand platform to better align the company’s brand assets with the FemmyCycle value proposition and core values of inclusivity, community, and education.

“The new customer-focused brand reflects the commitment to our global FemmyCycle community of customers, partners, and distributors,” said Director of Operations Monica Chinisaz. “2020 brought some of the greatest challenges we’ve ever faced, and this year also gave us an opportunity to change how we present our brand and engage with our customers.”

It was important for the FemmyCycle brand to be rooted in empowerment and the value of community. “We want to be the “older sister” that both experienced and novice cup users turn to and trust for the menstrual health questions and advice. Change starts with education, and education starts with having those candid conversations that have been considered taboo for so long.”

Built on the commitment to improve health and access to menstrual products worldwide, the rebrand will also enable FemmyCycle to better respond and adapt to changing consumer demands and positively impact global brand recognition. Monica Chinisaz explained, “We’re honored to have a presence in multiple countries around the world, and with that comes a responsibility to challenge the traditional social norms surrounding menstruation and inform our global FemmyCycle family that we stand united in the fight against menstrual inequality. FemmyCycle cups are more than innovative, reusable menstrual products. Our cups represent the confidence, strength, and power that lies within every person who gets a period - no matter their ethnicity, age, race, or gender.”

The company also announced updates to the FemmyCycle menstrual cup cleaning solution. Chris Petty, President, explains, “After looking at the market, we realized that we also needed to make a change with our cleaning solution. We worked with an innovative biotech company out of San Diego to formulate a new, proprietary, natural cleansing solution made with organic ingredients. We also redesigned the cleanser bottle and replaced the original plastic packaging with a new glass bottle to better align with our sustainability and eco-friendly corporate mission.”

OVERCOME THE MENSTRUAL CUP LEARNING CURVE WITH THESE FIVE TIPS

By: FemmyCycle

So you’ve made the decision to switch to a menstrual cup but now you’re feeling a bit squeamish. It’s understandable. Menstrual cups require you to get reeeeal up close and personal.

But, believe us when we say that the biggest hurdle you must overcome is mental, not physical. There’s a whole lot of benefits that await you once you’ve made the switch.

Whether you’re just embarking on your menstrual cup journey or are already a seasoned vet, these tips can and have helped people all over the world overcome the menstrual cup learning curve. We promise it’s worth the journey.

1. Get to Know Your Body

With so many menstrual cup options, how can you tell which cup is right for you? Our guide helps you understand your cervix height to better determine which FemmyCycle menstrual cup will have the most comfortable fit. This process includes inserting a clean finger into your vagina to locate and determine the height of your cervix. Since your cervix height will fluctuate throughout the course of your cycle, we recommend checking during, or right before your period to find the cup that will fit best while you’re menstruating.

2. Do Your Research

No two bodies are exactly the same, so it may require some trial and error to find the cup that works best for you. There are plenty of publicly available resources like video tutorials, Q&As, and online communities with tons of insight. Do you have a heavy flow? Low cervix? We recommend doing some research and using our menstrual cup sizing guide as a starting point to determine the ideal cup for your anatomy and needs. If you’re still unsure which cup will work best, check out our multi-pack option so you can try them all!

3. Determine Which Fold Works for You

FemmyCycle menstrual cup instructions provide different fold options for your cup. It may take a few cycles to get the hang of which fold provides you with leak-free protection and comfortable insertion and removal. Be sure to try out the different folds to see which fit works best.

4.Remember to BREATHE - and Relax!

If you find yourself tensing up when the time comes to remove your FemmyCycle menstrual cup, take a break and try again in 30-60 minutes. Seriously. Walk around, meditate, jam out to your favorite song…whatever you need to relax and try again later. Remember, your cup isn’t going anywhere, and it’s definitely not worth losing your sanity.

Bonus Tip - Remember to relax during insertion as well!

5. Remember Your “Why”

The decision to switch to a menstrual cup is a personal one, and whatever your reason(s) may be, keep these at the forefront of your mind as you’re riding the menstrual cup learning curve. Maybe your “why” is sustainability and minimizing waste, or maybe it’s because you don’t know what chemicals have been added to the cotton that collects, rather than absorbs, your menstrual fluid in conventional products. Perhaps you want the convenience of up to 12 hours of leak-free protection for those times when you don’t have access to a trashcan or toilet. Whatever your reason, remembering your “why” will make the experience of test-driving menstrual cups so much more rewarding.

And you’re off! Have more questions, want some inspiration, need a pep talk, or simply want to chat? Be sure to reach out to us on our social media channels or contact us at hello@femmycycle.com.

FemmyCycle Cleanser Update!

FEMMYCYCLE
CLEANSER UPDATE!

By: FemmyCycle

What a year! If 2020 taught us anything, it’s the importance of accountability, the power of reflection, and how our own actions (no matter how small they may seem) can cause a large impact on the world around us.

So what on earth (pun semi-intended) are we talking about!?

Our FemmyCycle Cleanser!

More specifically, the improvements we recently made to the FemmyCycle Cleanser packaging and formula that we feel are more aligned with our values and focus on sustainability and improving the user experience.

Considered one of our flagship products, the FemmyCycle Cleanser was formulated especially for cleaning the FemmyCycle menstrual cup. Consistent with our no-chemical stance we hold for all of our products, our FemmyCycle Cleanser formula is pH-neutral, derived from plant ingredients, and contains no added detergents, parabens, or fragrances.

So what did we change? The packaging and formula.

The Bottle Switch from Plastic to Glass

Let’s face it - the environmental impact of single-use (disposable) plastics is undeniable. Plastic is easy to make, lightweight, and cheap, which has made it one of the most popular packaging materials in the world for the past 70 years. In fact, half of all plastics ever manufactured have been made in the past 15 years, and plastic packaging accounts for about half of the plastic waste in the world (300 million tons of plastic waste each year to be exact).

It’s no surprise that many organizations choose to use plastic when it comes to their packaging. Heck, we were one of them. But in the spirit of continuous improvement, this year we recognized it was time to start reducing our footprint and hold ourselves accountable to our own eco-friendly values and standards, which is why we’re proud to announce that our new FemmyCycle Cleanser will be sold in glass bottles, for easy recycling and reuse - woohoo!

Bottle Cap Design Updates

You asked, we listened. Our original FemmyCycle Cleanser bottle featured a disc top cap for easy pouring of the cleanser solution. However, this often resulted in excessive waste from solution that was either poured out by mistake or through accidental opening of the disc top cap.

So what did we do? We updated the bottle cap design to feature a spray cap instead, for easy cleaning of your menstrual cup and an enhanced user experience.

Cleanser Formula Updates

During this year of reflection, we reexamined our original cleanser formula and noticed the inclusion of sodium coco sulfate as an ingredient could be construed as not being entirely 100% natural. Sulfates are considered a surfactant, which is commonly used in products such as shampoo, body wash, etc. for its cleaning and foaming properties. However, sulfates can cause irritation and strip the skin of natural oils, so we explored new cleanser options that would omit the use of sulfates.

It was important for us to ensure any new formula would remain all-natural and keep you pH-balanced, so we made some minor tweaks with this in mind. We removed sodium coco sulfate from the ingredients list so that our formula is now sulfate-free (yay!), and we added a few others to make the cup cleansing experience even better: witch hazel, lemon extract, and eucalyptus extract.

We love witch hazel because it acts as an anti-inflammatory - in fact, witch hazel is a natural astringent and antiseptic that has long been used to reduce inflammation. Lemon and eucalyptus are both considered to be antimicrobial agents with an added bonus for the lemon extract, which is a natural stain fighter that helps to reduce the appearance of stains on the cup. Score!

The Journey Continues

So there you have it. We saw opportunities for improvement and jumped on it. As a public facing company, it’s our duty to source all of our materials responsibly and be as transparent as possible when it comes to explaining the why behind any of the changes we make.

We know change is incremental, and we hope one small step for our packaging and formula reflects our commitment to practice what we preach. We are on this journey together with you (yes, you) and you can play a big role in holding us responsible for our actions. Let’s make a joint commitment to leave this world a little better than we left it, with a lot more love and awareness about how our actions can impact the environment and our planet.

What sustainability initiatives are you most passionate about?

LET’S GET STARTED

The FemmyCycle menstrual cup looks different because it is different. FemmyCycle’s patented design was created by a women’s health doctor to provide leak-free protection with the feel of a custom-fit. Made of soft 100% medical-grade silicone, the FemmyCycle cup provides comfort, ease, and peace of mind with a barely-there feel.

menstrual cycle phases, what is a menstrual cup, menstrual cycle hormones

USING YOUR CUP

It’s time to insert your cup! Be sure to wash your hands and follow the instructions below for a seamless process.

Get Comfortable

Make sure you are completely relaxed. Sit on the toilet with your knees apart, squat, or stand on one leg with the other leg resting on the toilet seat or tub.

Fold

Find the notch (indent) on the rim of the FemmyCycle cup. This notch will act as your north star to help guide you and find the fold that works best for you.

Fold down on the rim of the FemmyCycle cup, making sure to compress only the rim (and not the body of the cup itself). This will ensure there is air trapped inside the body of the cup.

Next, fold the cup using the method of your choosing. You may need to try different folds to find your favorite. We’ve included a few examples below.

C Fold

Flatten the cup and bring the two ends of the cup together to make a “C” fold. Rotate the cup horizontally to create a C-fold, with the notch now to the side of the cup.

You can also fold your FemmyCycle menstrual cup horizontally at the notch of the rim to form a “U” shape. The notch should now be at its highest point on the top of the half fold.

STEP 1

STEP 2

Tulip or “Punch Down” Fold

Using the punch-down fold, pinch down on the cup and place your finger in the middle. This will push the rim of the cup towards the base.

STEP 1

STEP 2

Insertion
  • Hold the folded FemmyCycle menstrual cup firmly with your index finger and thumb. Using the other hand, separate your labia.
  • Insert the FemmyCycle menstrual cup very slowly. Moving at a slower speed will help the cup open up inside your vagina.
  • Slowly push the cup backwards towards your urethra/pubic bone. Once the removal ring has entered the vagina, insertion is complete. It’s totally okay if the removal ring hangs out slightly, as this will make removal easier and ensure that the cup isn’t too close to your cervix during use.
  • Once inserted, the rim will open enough to collect your menstrual flow.
  • The FemmyCycle menstrual cup is designed to not open fully. The cup is meant to mold to you (and not the other way around). If inserted properly, you should not feel any discomfort with your FemmyCycle menstrual cup.
Breathe and Enjoy

You did it! Enjoy up to 12 hours of leak-free protection and a limitless period.

Removal
  • Give your hands a good wash.
  • Insert one finger into the vagina, hooking your finger into the removal ring. It’s normal for the cup to move around after insertion. Be sure to take your time finding the removal ring.
  • Bear down as if having a bowel movement. This will make the cup easier to remove.
  • Angle the cup downward and slowly pull on the ring to wiggle the cup down and out until it is completely removed. You can also squeeze the bottom of the cup to release any suction before slowly removing via the removal ring.
Empty
  • Open the cup’s foldable rim and empty contents into the toilet, tub, or sink.
  • Wash your cup with the FemmyCycle cleanser or mild soap and water. Allow the FemmyCycle menstrual cup to air dry and store the cup in the FemmyCycle sack for later use.

CLEANING YOUR CUP

To clean your FemmyCycle cup, pop out the funnel and rinse thoroughly using our FemmyCycle Cleanser or mild soap and water.

To take cleaning a step further, you can boil the cup in hot water for up to 3 minutes. We recommend limiting this process to only a few times a year to avoid compromising the quality of your silicone-based cup.

Be sure to wash your hands and clean your cup before and after each cycle.

STORING YOUR CUP

Dry your cup thoroughly before storing in the FemmyCycle sack provided. Do not store your cup in an airtight container or in a damp environment.

SAFETY INFORMATION

Please consult with your physician before using FemmyCycle products if you have any medical or gynecological concerns. Contact a medical provider if you are unable to remove your menstrual cup after more than 12 hours.

Menstrual cups may be used with IUDs, but we recommend consulting with your physician first.

We recommend replacing your cup every two years. This is a standard guideline for medical devices and personal hygiene products. Please make sure to never dispose of your cups in the toilet.

The FemmyCycle menstrual cup should only be used during menstruation and should not be used during intercourse. Menstrual cups do not protect against pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections. When in doubt, take it out.

If you experience any discomfort, pain, cramping irritation, or inflammation during or after FemmyCycle use, please remove your cup and contact your physician.

Do not use a menstrual cup if you have ever had Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). TSS symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, dizziness, and fainting. Please contact your physician immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
